A New World of Pearl Jewellery
My introduction to Melanie’s work happened quite unexpectedly. While researching South Sea pearls, I came across an image of a remarkable pearl bangle. What immediately captivated me was the innovative way the pearls were set on the metal. Their rounded surfaces appeared to float from within an oyster shell, embracing the wrist almost like a contemporary tattoo. The piece created an extraordinary interplay of colour, form and movement.
Curious to discover the designer behind this creation, I began researching further. This is how I discovered Melanie Georgacopoulos.
Today, Melanie is recognised internationally as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jewellery. Her ability to take a traditional jewellery element and transform it into an artistic, modern statement has become one of her defining signatures.
Roots in Athens
Born and raised in Athens, Melanie grew up in a bilingual family, immersed in two cultures and two different ways of thinking. This multicultural upbringing nurtured her creativity from an early age.
“I remember my brother watching me collect all sorts of materials and objects,” Melanie recalls. “One day he told me that I should try making jewellery with these things.”
Early Training and Education
As a teenager, Melanie already knew that jewellery would become her life’s path. She studied at MOKUME Independent School for Jewellery in Athens, where she acquired a solid grounding in traditional techniques such as filigree and repoussé, later expanding her studies into jewellery casting and production.
“MOKUME gave me an incredible foundation,”
she says.
Another pivotal moment in her artistic journey came when she pursued a BA in Sculpture in Scotland. This experience significantly broadened her creative horizons. Following this, Melanie completed a Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in London before immersing herself fully in the world of jewellery.
Finding Her Voice Through Pearl Jewellery
From the very beginning of her career, Melanie was drawn to circular forms. It was perhaps inevitable that pearls would eventually become central to her artistic vocabulary.
Today, she is celebrated for using pearls in radically innovative ways. At a time when many designers employed pearls in conventional settings, Melanie consciously chose a different direction.
“I wanted to make a difference in the way pearls were used,”
she explains.
“I was surrounded by jewellers using pearls in very traditional ways, so I instinctively wanted to move away from those norms and create something new.”
Early in her career, Melanie’s work was showcased by prestigious retailers such as Dover Street Market. Her exceptional talent soon attracted the attention of TASAKI, the renowned Japanese high jewellery house.
The TASAKI Collaboration
The collaboration proved transformative.
“I use pearls as a connecting thread in everything I do,”
Melanie says enthusiastically.
“TASAKI has been a milestone for me. In 2012, we launched MG TASAKI together, a collection that I create exclusively for them. As for my own collections, I usually release one collection each year, because every new piece must arrive at the right moment, when I feel ready to express an idea or explore an inspiration.”
Celebrating Pearl Jewellery: The Pearl Month Calendar
Very recently, Melanie launched a Pearl Month Calendar through her website and social media platforms, aiming to increase awareness and appreciation of pearls among a wider audience.
Where Inspiration Comes From
When asked where she finds inspiration, Melanie answers without hesitation:
“There is no specific source of inspiration. I think I simply have a creative muscle that is constantly moving. When I sketch, I sketch my thoughts and my ideas.”
New Directions in Pearl Jewellery: Chains and Conch
Her current work explores monochromatic concepts, leading her to incorporate materials such as onyx. Colour plays an essential role in achieving the visual impact she seeks. Chains have also become an increasing focus of her practice.
“I’ve always loved chains, although I haven’t used them extensively until recently,” she explains. “Combining chains with pearls can be challenging, but I enjoy exploring that dialogue between the two elements.”
More recently, Melanie has become fascinated by conch, the beautiful Caribbean shell prized for its luminous pink hues.
A Respected Voice in Contemporary Pearl Jewellery
Organic materials and treasures from the sea are transformed into wearable poetry through Melanie’s singular craftsmanship. This unique artistic vision has established her as one of contemporary jewellery’s most respected designers, with exhibitions, collaborations and pop-up presentations spanning London, Paris Fashion Week and numerous international destinations.
Melanie also revealed exclusively to The Jewellery Traveller that TASAKI will soon open its flagship boutique in Paris, news that she describes with great excitement.
What Lies Ahead for Pearl Jewellery
Looking to the future, Melanie’s aspirations remain deeply rooted in creativity and discovery.
“I simply wish to always have the same energy and excitement guiding me towards new, unexplored paths; to discover new materials for my jewellery, to continue dreaming, and to find ways of making those dreams come true.”
