In Conversation with Richard Wu:
Jewellery as Visual Narrative and Emotional Expression

A Designer Formed Between Worlds

Richard Wu stands as a compelling figure within contemporary jewellery—an artist shaped by the cultural dualities of his upbringing. Born in the United States and later returning to China with his mother, Richard was introduced early to the allure of precious stones. Their quiet brilliance and tactile symbolism formed the foundation of his lifelong fascination. His professional journey began with jade engraving, an art anchored deeply in Chinese tradition. Yet even in those early years, he sensed that his creative path would require a broader vocabulary—one that blended technical mastery with emotional resonance.

Milan: The Crucible of Artistic Awakening

Richard’s artistic evolution expanded dramatically during a three-month intensive course in Milan, Italy—a pivotal chapter that exposed him to European craftsmanship and design philosophy. Immersed in stone setting and wax carving, he was particularly shaped by the refined techniques of Buccellati artisans, whose precision and poetry left a lasting imprint.

“At the beginning, I could barely communicate. I had to learn Italian simply to express my admiration for the people and their craft. And the Duomo… I was obsessed. Whenever my confidence faltered, I would stand before it. Its presence reminded me to be resilient—to push harder, refine further, and stay faithful to my vision.”

The Emergence of an Artistic Identity

In 2020, with a renewed sense of purpose, Richard opened his jewellery studio in China—an act he describes as the beginning of his true artistic selfhood.

“I wanted my work to carry the dialogue between East and West,” he explains. “To flow naturally, yet remain contemporary and innovative.”

Each of his creations carries an intimate trace of his personal ambitions, memories, and internal complexities. Few pieces embody this more profoundly than the Black Veil, a concept that explores the tense interplay between concealment and revelation.

Black Veil: A Study in Paradox

When I asked why a mask became such an important motif, Richard’s answer was instinctive: “A mask is both a refuge and a barrier. It creates tension—what is hidden, and why? Across cultures, masks hold countless meanings, but at the heart of each is conflict.”

For Richard, the mask becomes a philosophical prism. It speaks to the universal pursuit of equilibrium: life and death, light and shadow, certainty and discovery. His jewellery transforms these contrasts into form—sculptural, expressive, and deeply symbolic.

Material Alchemy and a Spirit of Experimentation

Richard gravitates toward noble and unconventional materials like gold, platinum, titanium, aluminium—and more recently, ceramics. This combination allows him to challenge traditional boundaries and create pieces that are not merely decorative objects, but tactile artworks.

His guiding mantra, “Experience the impossible,” reflects an ethos of experimentation that runs through every stage of his practice. Few works exemplify this vision more than the piece that has become his signature innovation: the Bouncing Bangle.

The Genesis of the Bouncing Bangle

The Bouncing Bangle was born, quite literally, from a dream. “I dreamt of a galaxy wrapping itself around my arm,” Richard says. “When I woke up, I felt an overwhelming need to bring that vision to life.”

The challenge was formidable: to create a piece that captured the cloud-like softness and dimensionality of a galaxy while remaining functional, flexible, and comfortable. After months of experimentation, the first prototype emerged—an ethereal, kinetic form that debuted at GemGenève, where it immediately captivated collectors, journalists, and jewellery connoisseurs.

Its original fit was limited to smaller wrists, but the enthusiastic response drove Richard to push the design further. In September 2025, he introduced a more adaptable version at the Hong Kong Jewellery Show. Now, he is finalising the third evolution, set for its exclusive unveiling at GemGenève in May 2026.

A Designer Guided by Vision and Memory

What sets Richard apart is not only his technical curiosity, but also the emotional sincerity behind his work. Each piece is a fragment of his inner world—an exploration of identity, imagination, and resilience. He keeps the first model of every creation, forming an intimate archive he hopes one day to exhibit publicly.

Today, his designs are represented in select galleries and retailers across the United States, Hong Kong, Geneva, and China. Among his future aspirations is to introduce his work to the United Kingdom through a private exhibition dedicated to collectors and enthusiasts of wearable art.

Looking Towards The Future

As our conversation draws to a close, Richard shares news of the forthcoming third version of the Bouncing Bracelet, a project that continues his pursuit of innovation and his desire to articulate a new visual language within contemporary jewellery.

Richard Wu’s work reminds us that jewellery can be more than ornamentation—it can be narrative, philosophy, and emotion made tangible.
