Dive Into the Neon Blue
The Magical World of Paraiba Through the Eyes of Kevin Ferreira

“I am Paraiba’s safe place.”

While researching Paraiba tourmaline earlier this year, I came across a striking publication dedicated to one of the rarest and most extraordinary gemstones in the world. The cover alone was enough to stop me in my tracks. Compelled by curiosity, I reached out to the publisher—and to my delight, I received a response from the visionary behind the project: Kevin Ferreira.

Our exclusive interview took place over Zoom, bridging the distance between London and Miami. What unfolded was a captivating hour-and-a-half conversation between two people from different continents, united by a shared fascination with a gemstone so intensely beautiful that once you begin talking about it—or wearing it—you simply cannot get enough.

A Legacy Rooted in Nature

Kevin Ferreira was born and raised in the United States, with deep Brazilian roots. His upbringing was closely tied to the natural beauty of Brazil, as his family owns Paraiba mines not only in Brazil but also in Nigeria and Mozambique.

After initially pursuing a career in real estate, Kevin made a pivotal decision to dedicate himself to the promotion, sales, and marketing of Paraiba tourmaline from his family’s mines. The turning point came in 2019, when the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped industries worldwide.

Encouraged by his uncle, Kevin stepped into the family business to strengthen its online presence. What began as a practical move soon evolved into a clear calling.

To deepen his expertise, he enrolled in a gemology course at GIA, laying the foundation for a more informed and strategic approach to the gemstone market.

Educating the World on Paraiba

By 2022, Kevin identified a significant gap in the Paraiba market—not in supply, but in education.

He shifted his focus toward informing jewellery professionals and enthusiasts about the uniqueness of Paraiba. Today, he leads a strong PR team that organizes private training sessions for retailers and designers, alongside targeted social media campaigns.

His collaboration with Katerina Perez resulted in a beautifully curated book celebrating the mesmerizing glow of Paraiba tourmaline.

“Sometimes I like to say that I am always so exposed for the best benefit of Paraiba.”

For Kevin, this is just the beginning of a remarkable journey—one that positions Paraiba as a gemstone capable of rivalling even the most iconic diamonds.

The Journey of a Paraiba Stone

The sourcing process of Paraiba tourmaline is intricate and layered. A stone begins its life in the mines in rough form, before being transported to cleaning and processing facilities—often in Bangkok for Kevin’s family operations.

From there, it passes through wholesalers before reaching retailers and ultimately, the final buyer. Not all stones originate from family mines; some are sourced from the international rough market.

Kevin is keen to highlight that Paraiba is not exclusive to Brazil. Significant deposits are also found in Nigeria and Mozambique.

The Science Behind the Glow

Paraiba tourmaline owes its iconic neon brilliance to a rare combination of copper and tourmaline. Only tourmalines containing a precise amount of copper can achieve this electric blue to greenish-blue glow.

This copper content alters the way the stone absorbs and transmits light, producing its signature luminous effect.

Quality, Value, and the Beauty of Imperfection

“You must always ask yourself: what are you buying a Paraiba for?”

Colour is the defining factor in determining a Paraiba’s value. The vivid neon hue—often compared to the Mediterranean sea—creates a calming yet energizing visual experience.

Interestingly, inclusions are not seen as flaws in Paraiba stones. On the contrary, they enhance their uniqueness.

Water-like inclusions, reminiscent of droplets or raindrops, contribute to the stone’s character and depth. A flawless Paraiba is, paradoxically, less authentic.

“Accept nature as it comes—this is what Paraiba is for.”

Cut also plays a crucial role. The pear shape is particularly popular, as it concentrates light along the edges, intensifying the stone’s brilliance.

A Gemstone 600 Million Years in the Making

Formed approximately 600 million years ago, Paraiba tourmaline is as ancient as it is rare. Its complexity and scarcity make it one of the most sought-after coloured gemstones in the world today.

On the Global Stage

Ferreira Gems regularly exhibit at major international jewellery shows, including the renowned Tucson Gem Show. This May, Kevin will present his latest Paraiba collection at GemGenève, alongside unveiling upcoming projects.

Looking ahead, Kevin dreams of establishing a dedicated educational institution—“The Paraiba University”—where enthusiasts and professionals alike can study this remarkable gemstone in depth.

He also continues to organize exclusive mine tours in Brazil and Mozambique, offering visitors a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Paraiba mining and production.
