From Monumental to Personal Scale
There are designers who create objects, and then there are those who construct experiences. Mariam Ayvazyan belongs firmly to the latter. With a background rooted in architecture, her transition into jewelry design feels less like a departure and more like a natural evolution—one that scales monumental thinking down to the intimacy of the human body.
“I came to jewelry after many years of working as an architect,” she says. “So in a way, the connection was already there long before I consciously recognized it.” Trained to think in structure, proportion, and precision, Ayvazyan began to understand that these same principles could exist beyond buildings. “Architecture trained my mind to think in balance and detail—and over time, I began to see that these ideas could live on a much more intimate scale.”
Jewelry as Small-Scale Architecture
About six years ago, she began exploring jewelry as what she calls “small-scale architecture.” The transition was instinctive. “Instead of designing for spaces, I began designing for the body,” she explains. “The shift felt completely natural.” In this new dimension, objects are no longer simply observed—they are worn, touched, and experienced. “For me, each piece is like a miniature architectural composition—something that becomes part of the human body.”
The Balance Between Structure and Nature
Alongside this structural discipline is a deep fascination with marine life, which introduces a softer, more fluid counterbalance. “The organic, ergonomic forms found in nature—especially underwater—have always inspired me,” she says. “They offer a beautiful contrast to architectural precision.” This duality—geometry and movement, structure and softness—has become central to her work.

It is 100% handcrafted using only traditional Armenian goldsmithing tools and techniques — no digital modeling, no high-tech machines, no shortcuts. Every curve, junction, and texture was shaped by hand, just as it was centuries ago. This is not a reinterpretation — it is a continuation of an unbroken tradition.

Heritage and the Philosophy of Restraint
Her Armenian heritage also plays a subtle yet powerful role in shaping her aesthetic. Reflecting on ancient Armenian architecture, Ayvazyan is drawn to its clarity and restraint. “I realized that at its core, structure itself becomes ornament,” she says. “Every line, every volume has a purpose—nothing is added without reason.”
This philosophy translates directly into her jewelry. “I don’t think of elements as decoration—they belong,” she explains. “Each detail is part of the structure, not something applied afterward.” The result is work that feels both grounded and intentional. “There is something unapologetically honest and quietly powerful in this approach,” she adds. “The design stands complete within itself.”

Translated into jewelry, this principle becomes the soul of the design. Sterling silver and gradient gemstones, from deep sapphire blue to crystalline transparency, evoke the passage from depth to light. Two suspended blue Swarovski pearls mirror the obelisk’s floating foundation, symbolizing grace within structure and freedom within strength.
Rather than copying the obelisk’s shape, the earrings capture its spirit: the harmony between stability and movement, and the quiet strength that endures under pressure—a wearable reflection of timeless balance and elegance.
An Intuitive Creative Process
Despite the precision of her work, Ayvazyan’s creative process is often deeply intuitive. “There isn’t a single starting point for me,” she says. “Sometimes the design appears almost instantly—I can see the finished piece in my mind, sometimes even several variations at once.” These moments of clarity often arrive unexpectedly.
“Ideas come while I’m walking, or just before falling asleep—when the mind is free and images form naturally.”
At other times, the process begins with a gemstone. “I look at a stone, and the design reveals itself almost immediately, as if it was already there waiting to be uncovered,” she says.
A Dialogue with Gemstones
This relationship with stones marks an important evolution in her work. “In the beginning, I was designing mostly without stones—my focus was purely on sculptural form,” she explains. “But everything changed when a client asked me to create pieces centered around gemstones. That experience opened an entirely new world for me.”
Drawn to their inner complexity—the way they hold light, their inclusions, and their almost landscape-like presence—Ayvazyan began to see stones as collaborators. “Some stones feel like living forms,” she says. “Once I connect with one, the entire composition develops naturally from its character.” Today, the gemstone is often the guiding force. “It becomes the heart of the piece, shaping its proportions and energy.”
Balancing Sculpture and Wearability
Balancing boldness with wearability is another defining aspect of her practice. “I’m drawn to sculptural forms, but I refine them carefully so they don’t overwhelm the wearer,” she explains. Practical considerations remain essential.
“Proportion, weight, and ergonomics are crucial—these pieces are meant to live with the body.”
For Mariam Ayvazyan, the goal is harmony. “It should have a strong presence, but at the same time feel natural—almost effortless,” she says. “That tension between statement and ease is what makes a piece complete.”
A Defining Moment: Roma Jewelry Week
A defining milestone came with her presentation at Roma Jewelry Week last September—her first exhibition as a jewelry designer. “I had the opportunity to participate thanks to AJA selecting my work, and I’m truly grateful for that. It was a very important moment for me,” she reflects. “Being surrounded by such a high level of creativity and craftsmanship was both humbling and inspiring.”
The experience also offered valuable perspective. “What meant the most to me was the feedback from professional designers—their compliments, their insights, their advice,” she says. “It helped me see my work differently.”
That moment marked a shift. “It felt like a transition to a new level—not only as a designer, but in how I see my place within the international jewelry community,” she adds.
A Distinct Design Language
Today, Mariam defines her design language with clarity. “It’s a balance between structure and fluidity—where architectural precision meets organic movement,” she says. At its core lies a commitment to honesty. “Nothing is unnecessary, nothing is applied without meaning. Each element belongs.”
From this process, the ring emerged—an interpretation of architecture stripped to soul. Its sculptural gold setting echoes the cathedral’s elevated crown, where strength meets elegance in clean, intentional lines. At its center, a rare green sapphire introduces depth and mystery, while brilliant diamonds illuminate the structure like light across carved stone.
This piece is not simply inspired by architecture—it is architecture reimagined. A monument distilled into wearable form, where history becomes modern design, and ornament gives way to presence. Bold, refined, and deeply symbolic, it is created for those who see beauty not only in decoration, but in the power of structure itself.
Looking Ahead: Building a Lasting Identity
Looking ahead, her ambitions are both focused and expansive. “My goal is to establish a distinctive voice in fine jewelry,” she says. “I want to create timeless pieces that are instantly recognizable and internationally present.”
