Liu Yang -The Designer – Let Stones Tell Their Story

Liu Yang: The Designer Letting Stones Tell Their Story
Award-winning Chinese jewellery designer Liu Yang is redefining contemporary jewellery, crafting pieces that let nature — and imperfection — shine.
A New Perspective on Jewellery Design
In the world of contemporary jewellery, Liu Yang stands out for her poetic approach: she lets the natural beauty of gemstones take centre stage. Her work is part of a new movement of designers reshaping how we see the relationship between stones and metal — where nature leads and craftsmanship follows.
“I design around the stone, not the other way around.” — Liu Yang
Based in London, the Chinese-born designer combines the precision of a gemologist with the vision of an artist, creating pieces that feel both ancient and modern, raw yet refined.

From Beijing to London: A Global Journey of Craft
Liu’s creative path reflects her international background and technical mastery. After training at Central Saint Martins and the Gemological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), she pursued further gemology and gemstone-cutting studies in Russia. This unique education shaped a philosophy rooted in respect for the natural world and an obsession with craftsmanship. Her dedication soon earned her recognition at Goldsmiths’ Fair, where she received an award for innovation in stone setting.

Designing Around Nature’s Imperfections
Every piece Liu creates begins with the stone itself. She personally sources gemstones from around the world, searching for those that carry a visible story — inclusions, fractures, and textures that reveal their geological journey.
“I adore stones that show their natural character. They carry a story within them — traces of time and nature’s artistry.”
Rather than conforming to perfect symmetry, Liu celebrates imperfection as beauty, embracing what she calls “the quiet poetry of nature.”

The Art of Stone Setting
Liu’s collections, often crafted in sterling silver, feature stones such as labradorite, agate, and rutilated quartz. Instead of traditional mounts, she uses tension and prong settings, allowing the stone to appear suspended, as if floating. Each piece can take up to a week to complete, reflecting her meticulous approach. “It’s a demanding process,” she says, “but it allows me to create a sense of balance and lightness.”

Minimal Metal, Maximum Expression
Liu’s jewellery is instantly recognisable for its matte finishes and minimalist forms. She believes metal should frame, not dominate, letting the stone speak for itself. This quiet restraint gives her work a timeless yet contemporary feel — the meeting point between elegance and elemental beauty.
“I like the stones to be the protagonists.” — Liu Yang

Inspired by Heritage and Architecture
Liu’s aesthetic is deeply rooted in both her Chinese heritage and her architectural influences. Ancient jade carvings, with their spiritual stillness, serve as a constant source of inspiration. “When I look at ancient jade, I feel its stillness and strength,” Liu says. “I try to translate that spirit into modern jewellery.” Meanwhile, architectural geometry — from bold lines to delicate patterns — shapes her sense of structure, allowing her to transform spatial ideas into wearable art.

Crafting a Global Future
Now firmly established in London’s design scene, Liu exhibits her work in select galleries and through her online platform. She’s preparing to showcase her upcoming collections at international design fairs across Europe, continuing to evolve her technical and artistic voice.

Beauty in Imperfection
Liu Yang represents a fresh and thoughtful voice in contemporary jewellery. Her creations are not merely accessories but meditations on beauty, imperfection, and nature’s quiet poetry — tangible reminders that sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones written in stone.
